The Chiefs’ Triumph: Beyond Patrick Mahomes’ Brilliance, A Tapestry of Success Unfolds

While Patrick Mahomes plays a big part in Kansas City’s success, there’s more to it than that

This Wednesday, Charles Robinson, a Yahoo! Sports columnist, launched a scathing critique at Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots. In his extensive argument, Robinson challenged the validity of the long-standing “Patriot Way” established by the 71-year-old head coach over his 24 seasons in Foxborough, asserting that it may never have truly existed. According to Robinson, the franchise’s success is primarily attributed to the prowess of quarterback Tom Brady, suggesting that Belichick’s role in the achievements is comparatively limited.

[Belichick is] a no-nonsense, results-driven individual, so let’s adhere to that principle and present it without embellishment.

His coaching record in the regular season with Brady as a starter in New England stood at 219 wins and 64 losses, boasting an impressive 77.4 percent win rate. However, since Brady’s departure, Belichick’s regular-season coaching record with the Patriots has witnessed a shift, recording 27 wins and 32 losses, reflecting a 45.8 percent win rate.

While the Patriot Way and Bill’s leadership style remained unchanged post-Brady, the quarterback position underwent a transformation, seemingly taking Bill’s Midas touch along with it.

The Kansas City Chiefs once attempted to adopt “The Patriot Way” by bringing in New England personnel man Scott Pioli as their general manager in 2009. However, Pioli, along with several other former Patriots, faced setbacks after leaving Massachusetts. The recent firing of former New England assistant Josh McDaniels by the Las Vegas Raiders is just one example, as pointed out by Robinson.

What often goes unnoticed is that McDaniels is not the first disciple of the “Patriot Way” to receive a second chance, only to see it end in disappointment. Eric Mangini struggled twice as a head coach, with stints at the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns. Romeo Crennel faced similar challenges with the Browns and Kansas City Chiefs. Following this trio, former assistants of Belichick’s Patriot Way have encountered significant difficulties. Joe Judge experienced a 10-23 record with the New York Giants, ending in a revolt, while Matt Patricia recorded a 13-29-1 record with the Detroit Lions, reportedly facing a disenchanted locker room.

While Bill O’Brien is often cited as a success story, his tenure with the Houston Texans had its ups and downs, culminating in a tumultuous ending with locker room divisions between him and former Patriots-turned-Texans executive Jack Easterly.

When Pioli was dismissed after the Chiefs’ disastrous 2012 season, many believed that the success of the franchise was primarily due to the collaboration of Belichick and Brady. However, in hindsight, it appears Pioli recognized the need for a franchise quarterback to replicate the Patriots’ success in Kansas City. Unfortunately, Matt Cassel wasn’t the right fit for the job, and Pioli paid the price for bringing him to the Chiefs.

Robinson’s article raises an intriguing question: Could there come a day when a national columnist attributes the end of the Chiefs’ NFL dynasty to Patrick Mahomes? That seems unlikely.

In 14 years coaching the Philadelphia Eagles, Andy Reid won 58.3% of his regular-season games. However, in his first five years in Kansas City, that winning percentage increased to 66.3%. Since Mahomes became the starter, Reid’s Chiefs have achieved a remarkable 78% win rate. Unlike Belichick, who has struggled without Brady, Reid has demonstrated success without Mahomes.

Yet, these statistics also emphasize Mahomes’ undeniable impact on the team’s success. Without him, Reid has a 1-4 record in conference championship games (and a 0-1 record in the Super Bowl) over 19 seasons. Conversely, with Mahomes as the starting quarterback, Reid’s Chiefs have hosted five consecutive conference championships, winning three, and claimed two out of three Super Bowls.

If Kansas City’s current success is eventually labeled as a dynasty, a similar acknowledgment of Mahomes’ significant role will be necessary, echoing the recognition given to Brady during his time in New England. Unlike Belichick, however, Reid will have already proven his worth.

There’s a crucial distinction between these two scenarios that could have a profound impact: it appears highly probable that Patrick Mahomes will stay in Kansas City even after Andy Reid’s retirement, potentially contrasting with Belichick’s situation. Furthermore, in contrast to Belichick, Reid boasts a flourishing coaching tree, with around 15 of his former assistants achieving success in their coaching careers. Notably, two of them, John Harbaugh and Doug Pederson, have secured NFL championships as head coaches.

While it remains uncertain whether the Chiefs will maintain their success post-Reid, Reid’s track record suggests that the organization and the culture he has cultivated in Kansas City might endure triumphantly without him.

Acknowledging a degree of personal bias, I’ve long considered the Chiefs’ rare victories over New England during the Brady era as some of the team’s most significant moments. Consequently, witnessing Robinson’s dismantling of “The Patriot Way” was undoubtedly satisfying. Yet, even more gratifying is the realization that in Kansas City, the groundwork for an even greater dynasty might already be in progress.
